How can we improve the way waste is collected, sorted, recycled or managed?

Focus on innovations that help communities better respond to everyday challenges and emergencies.

WHO CAN PARTICIPATE?

Senior Secondary School students (SS1–SS3) from participating schools in Oyo State.

Teams must have:

3–5 students
1 Teacher Mentor
1 original project idea

Participants are expected to take part throughout the Challenge, from orientation and the Bootcamp through mentorship, prototype development and the Grand Finale.

CHECK ELIGIBILITY

To participate in the Engr. Rotimi Morgan Engineering Innovation Challenge, applicants must meet the following requirements:

    • Be a Senior Secondary School (SS1–SS3) student in a participating secondary school
    • Apply as part of a team of three (3) to five (5) students
    • Have a teacher mentor who will support and guide the team throughout the Challenge
    • Be enrolled in a participating secondary school within the project location (Oyo State)
    • Commit to participating in all stages of the Challenge, including orientation, the Engineering, Science & AI Bootcamp, mentorship sessions, and the Grand Finale
    • Submit an original project idea under one of the Challenge’s three official theme

    What is the Challenge?

    The Engr. Rotimi Morgan Engineering Innovation Challenge is a regional competition that invites secondary school students across South-West Nigeria to identify real challenges within their communities and develop innovative, engineering-driven solutions. Working in teams, students will explore ideas, build prototypes, receive mentorship from professionals, and present their solutions before a panel of judges at the Grand Finale

    Why was it created?

    The Challenge was established to honour the life and legacy of Engr. Rotimi Morgan by inspiring young people to think critically, solve problems creatively, and pursue excellence in engineering, science, technology, and innovation. It reflects his belief that young people have the potential to create practical solutions that improve lives and strengthen communities.

    Who can participate?

    The Challenge is open to Senior Secondary School (SS1–SS3) students from participating secondary schools across Oyo State. Students will participate in teams of three to five members, bringing together diverse skills and ideas to develop practical engineering solutions to real-world challenges.

    How many students can be on a team?

    Each team must have 3–5 students and one Teacher Mentor.

    Do I need to be good at coding or AI?

    No. The Challenge is about identifying problems and developing practical solutions. Students can use science, engineering, technology and AI where appropriate.

    What problems are students expected to solve?

    Participating teams will develop innovative solutions under one of the Challenge’s three focus areas: 

    • Sustainable Waste Management Infrastructure – exploring how engineering, science, and Artificial Intelligence can improve waste management systems and urban planning
    • Drainage Systems and Environmental Engineering – designing practical solutions that improve drainage infrastructure, reduce flooding, and promote environmental sustainability
    • Engineering for Community Safety and Resilience – developing engineering innovations that help communities address safety challenges, disaster prevention, preparedness, and resilience

    Through these themes, students will be encouraged to apply engineering principles, scientific thinking, and emerging technologies to solve pressing challenges affecting their communities.

It encourages students to become problem-solvers by applying engineering thinking to real-life situations. Through mentorship, teamwork, and practical project development, participants are challenged to create solutions with the potential to make a lasting impact in their communities while building the confidence and skills needed to become the next generation of innovators and leaders.

    What happens after we apply?

    Applications will be reviewed and the top 10 teams will be selected to participate in the Challenge.

    What happens to selected teams?

    Selected teams will participate in the Engineering, Science & AI Bootcamp, work with mentors to develop their solutions, and present their projects at the Grand Finale.
